A lawn mower, moving the lawn

There is little as satisfying as a freshly mowed lawn.

The smell of the freshly trimmed grass, the newly exposed deep green of before uncovered grass, the art of lawn mowing go far beyond the drudgery of weekend chores.

It is easy to see why so many homeowners take lawn maintenance so seriously.

However, even the most dedicated lawn tenders make mistakes.

There are many ways you can go wrong when trimming your grass that can cause your grass’s health to suffer.

In this post, we will give you eight tips for mowing your lawn that is often overlooked.

Trim Your Lawn Like the Pros

If you take pride in your home, then you must take pride in your lawn.

But how can you make a good lawn better?

Consider the tips below.

Ensure your blade is sharp and properly installed.

You would not believe how many of your friends and neighbors are mowing their grass with a dull blade.

Do yourself a favor, don’t be like them.

Have your lawnmower blade sharpened regularly to ensure that cutting through grass is a sinch.

Determine your grass species.

Did you know that there is more than one species of grass? In fact, there are thousands!

Your lawn is likely made of Kentucky Blue Grass, but there are dozens of other species that can find their way onto your property.

Each species of grass needs various levels of care and attention.

Find out what species of grass inhabits your yard, and you will be better able to tend to it.

Set your mower height to two inches plus.

Make sure your mower deck is leaving behind blades of grass that are at least two inches tall.

Any shorter than that and your grass's innards will be exposed, causing each blade to lose a significant amount of water.

Keep your blades longer than two inches to keep the grass green and healthy.

Mow at regular intervals.

Create a schedule and stick to it.

Don’t let your grass grow too long and don’t cut it too soon.

Your lawn thrives with consistency.

Have a disposal plan for clippings.

It’s true: you should leave behind a modest amount of yard trimmings after each cut, but nowhere near the gross total.

Have a plan for what you will do with your yard trimmings, or they will quickly pile up and turn to dry, flammable heaps.

Mow in the morning.

While it’s nice to sleep in on weekends, the mid-day summer sun is brutal on freshly clipped grass.

Instead, mow in the cool of the morning and your grass will retain more water (and therefore stay green).

Clear debris before you mow.

This is basic, but it needs to be said.

Get the toys, hoses, and garden supplies off your grass before you mow.

It will save you time and allow you to create a more efficient mowing pattern.

Never mow wet grass.

Wet grass is a nightmare for your mower.

It's sticky, heavy, and can easily clog your instruments.

Unless you want to spend half your Saturday unclogging your mower, never cut your grass when it is wet.

Mow Your Lawn with Pride

Every homeowner should take pride in their lawn’s health.

Use the tips above to help you foster a healthy, pristine lawn.
